Portal frames – getting better with time

Do you know the basic structure of Portal Frames was developed during the Second World War? Since then, portal frames have improved a lot; today these frames are being used as one of the most common structural forms for single storey industrial structures. A typical portal frame is manufactured with hot-rolled sections, supporting the roofing and side-cladding via cold-formed purlins and sheeting rails. The frame is made in such a way that it can withstand the toughest of conditions, and serve long.

If you look at the market, the most common form of the portal frame is that of pinned-based frame that is extensively used in the construction industry. The frame is made with different rafter and column member size with haunches at both the eaves and apex connections. It is to be noted here that almost everything about portal frames can be customised to fit the users’ needs.

Portal frames are quite common these days. A substantial portion of construction steel in UK is used in the construction of portal frames. And this amount of steel usage is sure to go up in the coming years.

A portal frame can also be used for enclosing large volumes, which means you can use the structure for commercial, retail, storage, and industrial applications. In a nutshell, portal frames are in demand and can be put to different usages; the only thing that needs to be kept in mind when looking for an ideal portal frame manufacturer is that it has been around for a good number of years, and is also known for quality products.

Effectiveness of Portal Frame

Constructing buildings are easy but strong base are not the thing that everybody cares for. Though it is the thing to care for, it is found to be ignored most of the times. Most often we get to hear that in so called place so called building collapsed. Is it good news to hear such incident? It is not, right? But also most of the builders do not apply best measures to prevent from such circumstances. But there are some of the industries that help to build best of the construction.

Nowadays, new technique called Portal frame is being used to prevent from uneven situations. It is a method to build, construct and design the structures by reinforcing steel concrete materials in the construction process. Though they can be constructed with the help of laminated timber they are reinforced with concrete materials. These steel framed portals help to carry the bending forces by making connections between the rafters and the columns. They are designed in such a way that they act as the moment resistant

The portal frame has very strong joints and is placed to fix the materials at a place. The bending moments that happen in the rafters are transferred to the columns with the help of these frames. The size of the rafters can be reduced and the span can be improved for increasing the span as well making it a very effective construction technique.
